We are excitedly preparing for this year’s See the Girl Summit. This Summit was the brainchild of the Policy Center’s founder and first CEO, Dr. Lawanda Ravoira. She wanted to create a dynamic learning experience where professionals could learn, share, and connect – all with the goal of improving how our community responds to girl’s critical needs. 11 years later, the Summit is an annual resource where national experts, researchers, and advocates gather to share best practices and new research. Every year, I leave inspired to keep going and continue the fight to advocate for girls’ rights.
It’s a bittersweet time for me as we celebrate and honor Dr. Lawanda Ravoira. She is a professional mentor, a respected and fierce advocate for girls’ rights, and I’m honored to say, a dear friend. She is a remarkable leader whose dedication to the well-being of girls has left an indelible mark on our community. Dr. Ravoira officially retired this fall, I am reflecting on her profound impact and extend our deepest gratitude for her tireless efforts and unwavering commitment.
I recall the moment I first saw Dr. Lawanda Ravoira present at a training on Human Trafficking. Captivated by her passion and hard questions, I knew immediately that I wanted to work alongside this amazing woman. I took a bold step and reached out to Lawanda via email, expressing my desire to meet and learn more about the work she was leading. This decisive moment marked the beginning of a transformative partnership.
During our meeting, Lawanda saw something special in me. Recognizing my potential and enthusiasm, Lawanda offered me an opportunity to apply for a position at the Policy Center. This opportunity proved to be life-changing, opening doors to meaningful work that aligned with my values and aspirations. Lawanda has not only been my boss; she is a partner and advocate in the work that is our shared passion. Together, we have collaborated on initiatives aimed at empowering girls and addressing systemic issues that affect their well-being. Lawanda’s leadership style emphasized collaboration and inclusivity, allowing me to grow and flourish as a leader in my own right.
Lawanda mentorship was a cornerstone of my professional development. Lawanda encouraged me to be fearless and use my voice, often prompting me in community meetings with the question, “What do you think, Vicky?” This simple yet powerful gesture instilled confidence in me, helping me realize my potential and trust my instincts.
Lawanda’s ability to see and trust me even when I doubted myself, continues to inspire me every day. Under Lawanda’s guidance, I learned the importance of being an advocate not just for others but for myself. Lawanda’s support and belief in my capabilities have been instrumental in shaping my career and approach to leadership.
A Lifetime of Advocacy
Dr. Lawanda Ravoira’s journey has been one of passion, perseverance, and profound empathy. For decades, she has championed the rights of girls, particularly those who are most vulnerable- girls of color, girls in foster care, LGBTQ+ girls, and girls from underserved communities. Her work has not only transformed individual lives but also reshaped systems and policies to better serve and protect young women.
From her early days as an advocate at various non-profits to her tenure as the founder and CEO of the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center, Dr. Ravoira’s vision has always been clear: to create a world where every girl has the opportunity to thrive. Her approach has been holistic, recognizing that the challenges faced by girls are complex and multifaceted. Through her leadership, she has addressed issues ranging from trauma and mental health to education and juvenile justice.
Transformative Leadership at the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center
Under Dr. Ravoira’s stewardship, the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center became a beacon of hope and change. Her innovative programs and initiatives have provided critical support to countless girls, empowering them to overcome adversity and achieve their full potential.
One of her most notable achievements is the establishment of the Girls’ Leadership Council, which has empowered young women to become advocates for themselves and their peers. This program, along with many others, reflect her belief in the power of young voices and the importance of fostering leadership skills from a young age.
Dr. Ravoira’s commitment to trauma-informed care has also been groundbreaking. By educating professionals on how to support girls who have experienced trauma through the Girl-Centered Practice Institute, she has ensured that these young women receive the compassionate and effective care they deserve. Her work in this area has not only benefited individual girls but has also influenced broader practices and policies.
Community Impact and Legacy
The impact of Dr. Ravoira’s work extends far beyond the walls of the Policy Center. Through her advocacy and research, she has driven significant policy changes at both the local and state levels.
